Expressions of Interest: Board Treasurer
Story Island is seeking expressions of interest (EOI) from enthusiastic, experienced and skilled individuals interested in joining our voluntary Board of Directors as the organisation’s Treasurer.
The Story Island Project Board is a skills-based board that also values diversity and inclusion. We welcome Expressions of interest from appropriately qualified individuals and we specifically encourage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, people from culturally diverse backgrounds, people who identify as LGBTI and people with disability to submit an EOI for this role.
Please note, as our Board is a voluntary board, this position is not remunerated..
About our Board
Story Island’s Board is responsible for the governance of the organisation and overseeing its management, including the allocation of resources. They ensure the aims of the organisation are carried out in accordance with the strategic plan, and legal and funding requirements. Positions on the Story Island Board are three-year terms. The Board meets in person six times a year, plus occasional additional duties (including participation in strategic planning, sub-committees/working groups, out-of-session discussions/decision making).
Expectations of Board Members
Act honestly and in good faith, using the powers of office for a proper purpose and in the best interests of the organisation;
Use care and diligence in fulfilling the functions of office and exercising the power attached to that office;
Properly manage any conflict with the interests of the organisation, and declare any conflicts of interest to the Board, including any potential or perceived conflicts of interest;
Be independent in judgment and actions, and take all reasonable steps to be satisfied as to the soundness of all decisions taken by the Board;
Ensure confidential information received remains the property of Story Island and not disclose it, or allow it to be disclosed, unless authorised by Story Island or required by law;
Work collaboratively, acknowledging and respecting differences of opinion;
Read and consider Board papers before board meetings; and
Attend and actively participate in board meetings.
The role of Treasurer
Story Island’s Treasurer is responsible for ensuring good financial governance of the organisation through:
Exercising appropriate oversight of the organisation’s General Manager and (external) accountant, in relation to various financial and accounting tasks;
Requesting and checking board financial reports prior to their presentation at board meetings, ensuring accurate and clear reporting;
Providing advice to the Board in relation to financial reports, forecasts, and other matters;
Liaising with Story Island’s General Manager, accountant and with the independent Auditor to guide the preparation of Story Island’s annual Financial Reports;
Presenting audited Financial Reports to the Board at the Annual General Meeting.
Specific tasks performed by Story Island’s Treasurer include:
Final checking of payroll processing (amounts payable) each fortnightly payroll cycle;
Setting up and authorising bank transfers on behalf of The Story Island Project once per fortnight for salary and other payments, notifying another board member to co-authorise each payment, and ensuring each transfer completes;
Liaise with the General Manager on transfer of funds from Story Island’s main account to its debit card account, to enable GM to make payments within delegatory limits; and
Provide financial advice and assistance to the GM and to board members, as required.
The EOI Process
All EOIs received will be confidential to the Story Island Board. The Board Chair and selected members of the Board may wish to talk to people expressing interest, and final decisions will be made by the full Board. All people participating in this process will be advised of outcomes.
PLEASE NOTE: As Story Island is an Incorporated Association under the Associations Incorporation Act (Tas) 1964, only people who ordinarily reside in Tasmania are eligible to join our Board.
